Depression

Depression is a logical response to a life that isn’t giving you what you need. In that way, it’s closer to grief than it is to simple sadness. A depressed person isn’t broken; their life is.

From the outside, depression can just look like sadness, or laziness, or weakness. It’s not. People with depression get told to “just snap out it”, or get told that they’ve got nothing to be sad about. Well, they can’t, and they do. Depression isn’t illogical, nor is it as simple as a problem with their brain chemistry. It’s bigger than that. It’s more complicated than that.

We need to get certain things out of our life, and when we don’t, we feel bad. Enough feeling bad and we become depressed. Meds can help, for sure. But not as much as reconnecting with what’s really important in your life. Maybe it’s getting a new job, or making new friends, or finding purpose and fulfillment in your life. And that’s where therapy can really help.

I can help you reconnect with the things that really matter to you, and help you overcome whatever obstacles are in your way. Depression is an insidious beast, as it is often the first, and sometimes greatest, obstacle to overcome, in order to start to heal. [before what? on your journey to where?] And the more it gets in the way, the more powerful it becomes, gaining a really negative momentum. I can help you get started on the journey to healing, where each step you take makes the next step a little bit easier. Where the momentum shifts, and instead of pulling you down, it starts to lift you up.

If any of this sounds like what you’re dealing with, and if you’re ready to start trying to overcome it, come talk to me. We’ll figure out what’s causing your depression and we’ll figure out a way to beat it. No matter how deep and dark the hole, there is a way out, and we can find it.

Please note: I do not prescribe medications. So if an antidepressant is something you want to try, you’re going to have to talk to your doctor. But still come talk to me, too. The treatment for depression is generally more than just pills.
